Welcome to the easiest way to keep track of your family’s best reading experiences! 

This editable Google Sheets template beautifully displays info for picture books, chapter books, and read-alouds—including book covers!

This product is a done-for-you Google Spreadsheet that includes the following tabs:

  • Tab 1: Welcome page with 3 video tutorials, explaining exactly how to use this spreadsheet to its fullest. You DON’T need to be a spreadsheet whiz.
  • Tab 2: Picture Book Log Keep track of your family’s best-loved picture books
  • Tab 3: Chapter Book Log Keep track of the chapter books your kids read with you or by themselves
  • Tab 4: Read-Aloud Log Keep track of the books you read aloud together
  • Tab 5: TBR Keep track of the books your kids want to read next.
  • Tab 6: Booklists Find a list of all the Newberry and Caldecott winners, as well as my own list of classic books for kids and teens.

The Book Log tracks book data across 19 fields:

  1. Title
  2. Author
  3. Illustrator 
  4. Star Rating
  5. Best Age (is the book best suited to younger or older kids?)
  6. Format (print, digital, audio)
  7. Type (fiction/nonfiction)
  8. Primary Genre (select from drop-down)
  9. Virtue (select from drop-down)
  10. Vice (select from drop-down)
  11. Special Features (select from drop-down)
  12. Season / Holiday (select from drop-down)
  13. # of Pages
  14. Year published
  15. Awards won
  16. Owned
  17. Date finished
  18. DNFs
  19. Notes

You can sort and filter your books by any of these fields. For example, you can sort books by primary genre. You can choose to display only 5-star reads.

Why should you keep a digital book log?

1. Easy and Organized! Drop-down menus allow you to select from multiple preloaded options without wracking your brain.

2. Filter and Sort. Play around with your book data to quickly find exactly what you’re looking for.

3. Keyword Search. The digital format allows you to search the entire spreadsheet by keyword to find what you want FAST. 

4. Read more, read better! It’s incredibly motivating to track the books you’ve read as a family. Your kids can get a sense of their taste in books—a crucial step in a young reader’s development!
