These books feature characters that scheme, manipulate, and deceive to get what they want, concealing their true motives behind the mask they present to the world.

Naturally, there are a lot of thrillers and crime novels here, but you’ll find some must-read classics and contemporary novels, too.

I try to lean into books that have withstood the winnowing effects of time, but you’ll see a few more recent reads on this list—not usually my norm.
